<div style="">As the driving force behind Danica Patrick’s ascension to Indy Car and now NASCAR stardom, Bobby Rahal is uniquely positioned to comment on the effect that the diminutive driver had on open-wheel racing – and on how the sport is affected by her departure to the stock-car world.</div>
<div style="">“At least we get to focus on the racing now, and the people who are here, who are damn good drivers,” Rahal said in a press conference today. “The other drivers that were here didn’t get the attention they should have gotten. Now we get to get back to what it’s all about, which is great racing.”</div>
<div style="">Patrick wore Rahal Letterman colors on her meteoric rise to racing fame, including carrying the iconic team marks to the cover of Sports Illustrated, which had been verboten to Indy Car driver for the 10 years prior to her arrival. And while her arrival to the series brought a ton of much-needed publicity to the sport, Rahal believes that the benefits of that spotlight obscured the brilliance of the rest of the paddock.</div>
<div style="">“It was a ying and a yang. Danica did great things for this series, but I think oftentimes perhaps at the expense of the series,” said Rahal. “Maybe we don’t have that great personality which now NASCAR has, whether it’s (Dale) Earnhardt or herself. In the end, I wish her well. Now it’s all about the racing, which to me is what it all should have been about in the first place. There’s a lot of stories that are very important. People will say the racing is not as good as it was in the heyday of CART. I totally disagree. I think the driver level today is as good or greater than it was during the height of the series in the late 1990s, early 2000s.&#8221;</div>

<div style="">The sponsorships of Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Ryan Newman could be in jeopardy as military sponsorships of motorsports have come into question in the U.S. House of Representatives.</div>
<div style="">The House Appropriations Committee approved an amendment Thursday to the 2013 defense appropriations bill that would prohibit funding of sponsorships of professional sports or sporting events.</div>
<div style="">The National Guard sponsors Earnhardt for 18 races and the U.S. Army sponsors Newman for 12.</div>
<div style="">The amendment, passed by a voice vote and sponsored by Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) and Betty McCollum (D-Minn.), states that: “None of the funds made available in this act may be used to sponsor professional or semiprofessional motorsports, fishing, wrestling or other sports.”</div>
<div style="">“My amendment wouldn’t prevent military recruitment at sporting events. It does prohibit racecar drivers from being paid $20 million,” McCollum tweeted Thursday.</div>
<div style="">She also noted that the amendment would save taxpayers $80 million.</div>
<div class="embedded-article-image" style=""><img src="http://dy.snimg.com/story-image/5/58/2829160/94861-330-0.jpg" style="" />
<div class="storyDeck" style="">Dale Earnhardt Jr. is sponsored by the National Guard for 18 races this season. (AP Photo)</div>
</div>
<div style="">Newman said he would hate to see the sponsorship end, especially for what the motorsports program does as part of science, technology, engineering and math education for youngsters.</div>
<div style="">“It’s no different than any other sponsor is when it comes to somebody in the corporation going for it and somebody going against it,” Newman said. “It’s just the way the government works and the way their sponsorships works, they’re in a different situation.</div>
<div style="">“Somebody has brought up a valid point but in the end I don’t know what the final answer is going to be. We’re proud to represent the U.S. Army and do all the things that we do to add to the recruiting and add to the education side.”</div>
<div style="">The National Guard has spent anywhere from a low of $18.1 million in 2008 to a high of $35.2 million in 2010 on its motorsports program with Earnhardt, including what it pays to Hendrick Motorsports and activation of the sponsorship, according to an email the National Guard sent to McCollum and provided by McCollum’s staff. The National Guard plans to spend $26.54 million in 2012, which includes primary sponsorship of 16 races for Earnhardt.</div>
<div style="">The bill still needs to be passed by the House and then the provision would have to make it through any negotiations with leaders from the Senate and its defense appropriations bill.</div>
<div style="">Last year, McCollum introduced an amendment banning motorsports sponsorships on the House floor and it was voted down 281-148.</div>

<p />
<div class="text" style=""><strong style="">ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J.</strong>&nbsp;- The 2012 North American Ferrari Challenge Series continues with the third race of its 19th season at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, the legendary track set against the picturesque backdrop of the Monterey Peninsula, California.&nbsp;
<p />Spectators are welcome to attend the race, and enjoy paddock areas and overall Ferrari-festival atmosphere. Tickets are now available through the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca website (<a href="http://www.MazdaRaceway.com">www.MazdaRaceway.com</a>) or by calling the Ticket Office at (800) 327-7322 or (831) 242-8269, 8am &#8211; 5pm PST, Monday – Friday. VIP Hospitality Packages to the Ferrari Challenge can be purchased by contacting the Ferrari Concierge at 1-866-551-2828.&nbsp;
<p />“There is perhaps no better way to experience the passion of Ferrari together with the technology and engineering excellence of our cars than to attend the Ferrari Challenge racing days,” says Marco Mattiacci, President &amp; CEO, Ferrari North America. “True to the spirit of Ferrari, the competition at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca will be intense.”&nbsp;
<p />Adding to the excitement at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, the Corse Clienti Department’s 599XX “evolution,” FXX and F1 Clienti programs will also participate on the track. Competitors will exclusively drive the Ferrari 458 Challenge, which debuted at the start of the 2011 Ferrari Challenge series and is derived from the spectacular 458 Italia road car.&nbsp;
<p />Judging from the results of the second Ferrari Challenge weekend of the 2012 season, held at Infineon Raceway from April 27-29, this third race in the series at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca will be no less exhilarating for drivers and spectators alike.&nbsp;
<p />At Infineon Raceway, victory in the Ferrari one-make series went to Harry Cheung. Driving the Ferrari of Beverly Hills 458 Challenge, he started from third on the grid and immediately went into the lead, which he kept to the checkered flag. Second was the winner of Race 1, Onofrio Triarsi, who in his Ferrari of Central Florida car, drove a great race, moving up the order from twelfth to second place, beating Richard Fant driving for Ferrari of Houston into third. Pole man Ryan Ockey (Ferrari of Ontario) took a well deserved win in the Coppa Shell, finishing fourth overall ahead of Jose Valera (Ferrari of Fort Lauderdale) and Robert Herjavec (Ferrari of Ontario.)&nbsp;
<p />Regarded as the longest-running of its type in North America, the Ferrari Challenge Series is now beginning its 19th season and offers Ferrari owners the opportunity to compete against each other at world-class venues throughout the U.S. and Canada. Following this race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, the 2012 Ferrari Challenge will continue to the following:&nbsp;
<p />Montreal, Canada, (during the Canadian F1 Grand Prix), June 8-10&nbsp;<br style="" />Toronto, Canada, July 6-8&nbsp;<br style="" />Lime Rock Park, CT, July 20-21&nbsp;<br style="" />Homestead Miami Speedway, FL, September 28-30&nbsp;
<p />The Ferrari Challenge Series is organized by Ferrari North America, Inc., and sanctioned by the Grand American Road Racing Association. Complete Challenge information can be found on <a href="http://www.ferrarichallenge.com">www.ferrarichallenge.com</a>.&nbsp;
<p />Ferrari North America, Inc. is headquartered in Englewood Cliffs, N.J., and is the exclusive North, Central and South American importer of Ferrari vehicles including the 458 Italia, 458 Spider, the California and FF Grand Tourers, and the newly unveiled Ferrari F12berlinetta.&nbsp;

This step allows the board to continue its discussions with possible investors and prospective purchasers with a view to securing the best outcome for the staff, creditors and customers of both businesses.</div>
<div>The Lola board have declined to make further comment until Monday 21st May.

<div style="">LAT PHOTOGRAPHIC &#8211; Conor Daly, from Noblesville, Ind., won the GP3 race in Barcelona for the Lotus GP team last weekend.</div>
</div>
<p />
<div style="">Expect a formal announcement early Wednesday about American race car driver Conor Daly&#8217;s motorsports future. Sources in Indiana, where Daly is from, confirmed that the announcement will regard a deal that Daly, 20, has signed with a well-regarded Formula One team.</div>
<p />
<div style="">This puts two American drivers on the fast track to a Formula One career, including Daly, son of former Formula One driver Derek Daly, and Alexander Rossi, the 20-year-old, California-born open wheel driver who is signed as a test driver for the Caterham F1 team, and who has been competing in the Formula Renault series.</div>
<p />
<div style="">Daly&#8217;s announcement comes on the heels of his first GP3 victory last weekend in Barcelona, Spain, driving for the Lotus GP team. Daly, in his second year of GP3 racing, has also competed in Indy Lights and in the Star Mazda series, where he was the champion in 2010. Derek Daly raced in Formula One from 1978 to 1982 before moving to the CART series.</div>

<div style="">LAT PHOTOGRAPHIC &#8211; Kurt Busch sits on his car after bumping the back of Ryan Newman&#8217;s car on pit lane following the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Darlington on Saturday night.</div>
</div>
<p />
<div style="">NASCAR has fined Kurt Busch $50,000 and placed him on probation until July 25 for his actions during last weekend&#8217;s Sprint Cup Series race at Darlington Raceway. The driver for Phoenix Racing was cited for violating Section 12-1 of the NASCAR Rule Book.</div>
<p />
<div style="">Officials determined that Busch drive recklessly through the adjacent pit of Ryan Newman during a late-race stop to repair damage from a tire-related accident. Afterward, Busch bumped into the back of Newman&#8217;s car as it sat on pit road after the Bojangles Southern 500. The crewmen for both teams were briefly involved in a fairly benign pushing-and-shoving fracas.</div>
<p />
<div style="">Section 12-1 addresses the umbrella “actions detrimental to stock-car racing.” In Busch&#8217;s case, that includes reckless driving on pit road during the race and being involved in an altercation with another competitor after completion of the race. In addition, Phoenix Racing crewman Craig Strickler has been fined $5,000 and placed on probation until Dec. 31 for violating the “interfering with a member of the broadcast media” part of Section 12-1.</div>
<p />
<div style="">Tony Gibson, crew chief of Newman&#8217;s car, has been put on probation until June 27 for violating Section 12-1 and Sections 12-4G and 9-4A, which makes the crew chief responsible for the actions of his team members. Andrew Rueger, one of the Newman/Gibson crewmen, has been fined $5,000 and placed on probation until June 27 for violating Section 12-1. That addresses his failure to comply with a directive from a NASCAR official after the race.</div>
